Arthur's Pizza - Paddington
Editorial
The upside-down sign at the Arthur’s of old signalled a quirky pizza bar with the most amazing pizza I had ever tasted. The staff were eccentric, the pizza divine, and the chocolate tart sexy as all hell. In fact, when my friend got a job at Arthur’s spinning pizzas I think I was more pleased than he; my mouth would never again be wanting for rich, thin-base pizza topped with ripe tomatoes, fresh mozzarella and spicy Italian sausage made on the premises. For a while I was living the dream, but alas, these things cannot last.
Last year the Arthur’s boys relocated to the ground floor of Custom’s House, opening Young Alfred, while founding owner and landlord Arthur Premetis took over Arthur’s, turning the sign the right way up while rubbing regulars the wrong way. The new pizza isn’t bad, but the toppings suggest cost-cutting; ingredients like prosciutto and prawns appear as a garnish rather than the main ingredient the menu suggests. The interiors have been slicked up with shiny surfaces and trendy lighting, and the new staff are polite, but lack the verve that made the other Arthur’s so entertaining. It's open late, ideal for a greasy bite after a night out, but it just ain’t like the Arthur’s of old.

Arthurs is a Sydney institution. If it stayed the same we would complain it didn't keep up with the ages. If it changes, you upset the regulars. Just like Pellegrinis in Melbourne is part of the social fabric, so is Arthur's Pizza. I recently returned to Sydney from a few years overseas and the Arthur team showed great hospitality - keeping the wine flowing and making recommendations. Give some energy and you'll get it back!
