The Firehouse Hotel
Editorial
Amid Walker Street's pre-fab officescape, the Firehouse is a welcome respite. This heritage-listed building once served as a fire station and licensees have taken great care to preserve its industrial lure. A clever use of salvaged timbers augments a lovely building and the only thing that could make the interior more pleasing is the use of some actual firefighters.
Instead of hunky, heritage-listed heroes, however, we have the men and women of the NBD. And, honestly, after a Berry Caprioska, some of them don't look too bad. They're certainly in high spirits; most particularly on a Friday evening when the hot-spot is packed to within an inch of fire regulations.
The Firehouse has so many northern habitues for a reason: or, rather, several. A large outdoor area is perfect for those who prefer alfresco leisure. By which we mean: yes, you can smoke. Decent meals served at very decent prices fill the gap between boutique beers served up by smiling staff. Or, if you prefer, you can lounge in the cocktail area rather than the bar and try a little sugary alchemy after your steak. Citrus and tropical flavours dominate the mixology here. However, you can always melt into the allures of a Chocolate Fireman.
