Finding a Thai restaurant in Newtown isn’t exactly a challenge – you could probably walk into one with your eyes closed. There is also no shortage of good Thai on the bustling streets of this culturally-charged suburb; however what Thai Riffic Newtown brings to the mix is a moody, funky space that turns a Thai binge into a classy dining experience. Situated on Newtown’s vibrant King Street, Thai Riffic shares the pavement with no fewer than 19 Thai restaurants. Yet it is the only one that boasts modern chandeliers, dark moody interiors, lots of woodwork and a magical, tea-light-lit back outdoor area that invites style-seeking foodies and bohemian free spirits to devour some seriously good Thai food.
The menu covers all of the favourites – noodles, salads, curries and stir-fries – as expected but to this adds a selection of specials. If you’re feeling a little adventurous you may like to try the king prawn pad Thai instead of the usual chicken. Or, if you like these crustaceans, you might like to sample the creamy or peppercorn king prawns from the specials menu. Any diners sticking with the good ol’ faithfuls should not miss out on the Thai Riffic rendition of beef mussamun curry. In this dish you will find cuts of stewed beef so tender they fall apart under the pressure of your fork (or chopsticks) and glide into a creamy mussamun curry sauce alongside grilled baby potatoes. Drink your selection down with one of the reds or whites available by the glass or bottle or bring your own vintage to the table for a small corkage fee.

Ate here by default,the other place we chose was closed. We had friends up from Melb, and was very pleasantly surprised. The food was great and so was the service. We had a great night.
