Editorial

Where most Mediterranean and tapas restaurants are heavy on dim decor, warm tones, rustic furniture and Spanish beats, Soni’s in Newtown remains unattached to this tradition. Instead the dining room, in the rear of the restaurant, is modern and slightly clinical in feel. Lime green walls and neat tables are lit by low lighting. In a hint of a traditional comeback, the front of the restaurant boasts a raw stone feature wall with a bar and high stools, where post-work gossipers and friends gather to catch-up over drinks and tapas. But beyond this, the decor looks modern Australian.

The tapas menu isn’t huge but has enough of a mix of the right, meat, fish and vegetarian dishes that you can easily pick three for yourself and nibble into the night. Six dishes between two people are plenty and with prices starting at $6, they are good value for money. In addition to the tapas menu, daily specials are listed on chalkboards. These are a little more expensive but certainly worth a look. Choices range from token chorizo, potatas bravas and prawn dishes to ones featuring chipolatas, chicken wings and lamb. To accompany your noshing session in the cooler months, Soni’s offers warming mulled wine scented with clovers and spices. In warmer weather sangria takes over the party spirit. And while this restaurant lacks some of the warmth generally associated with Spain and the Mediterranean, it delivers on flavour and price.

I heard so much hype about this place and as it came very highly recommended, I proceeded to take my visiting inlaws for a night of spanish cuisine. As a previous manager of a Spanish Tapas bar in NZ, I was disappointed with the selection of food and even more so when the food came out. The portions were extremely small considering the pricing(4 prawns for $18?) and there was very little authentic about the menu or the flavours. The 6 of us, left the restaurant $350 lighter and proceeded to Bugerlicious to fill up. A disappointing evening and a very ordinary meal that we couldve gotten elsewhere for less than half the price and bigger portions. Sadly I will not be recommending this place to anyone. The customer service though was really fantastic!
