Newtown RSL
Editorial
Beer is stupid cheap in this haunt, in the heart of Sydney's alternative arty scene. Thankfully it's conveniently well-served by public transport, so you can leave the car keys at home and make the most of the silly prices. A bowl of pasta can be scoffed for as little as $5. Just don't expect it to match up to anything served in Italy, that's all.
In time-honoured tradition, @Newtown sports a particularly gruesome carpet, but the place has made some attempt at sprucing up its image. Some of the many pokies have quietly disappeared out the back door, with actual real poker nights taking their place.
Plenty of local bands use this venue as something of a warm up act before heading on to (fingers crossed) bigger and better things. Bingo and raffles are a common occurrence, and if you can prove you live within a 5k radius, you can sign up to become a temporary member for even better discounts. Because sometimes cheap grog just isn't cheap enough.
