Black Star Pastry
Editorial
This tiny bakery and cafe tucked away in Newtown's Australia Street has earned a very big reputation. The project of renowned pastry chef Christopher The (of Quay and Claude's fame), the focus here is on the sweeter side of dining - with treasure chests of goodies as far as the eye can see. Opening at 7am each morning, pop in for a fresh loaf of sourdough or a baguette, which you'll find lined up on the back wall behind the registers. The coffee machine brews morning coffees as earlybirds perch on the cafe's few available seats.
For lunch you'll find an aromatic selection of pies and sausage rolls waiting in the warmer - try the mince or the lamb shank with red wine options for real belly pleasers. Gourmet sandwiches, baguettes and quiches make a quick exit during the lunchtime rush, so make sure you hop in early to beat the crowds. Nab one of the coveted window seats, or usher your lunch across the polished timber floorboards and out to Camperdown Memorial Park. Morning and afternoon tea treats are aplenty here; cast your eye over the delicately created morsels and peek into the back kitchen to see the masters creating their art. Gingerbread ninjas (available “naked” or covered in chocolate) will please the kids, or the kids at heart, or choose from the variety of tarts and pastries on offer. Raspberry galettes and strawberry crumbles are deliciously inviting, or indulge in a perfectly formed chocolate and caramel tart. Caneles, custard tarts and mini pear tarts all offer small portions of sweetness, or why not sink your teeth into a devilish chocolate eclair, complete with white icing scrawl.
