An outdoor paradise for young and old alike, this hotel should be your only destination this summer.

Editorial

The Newport Arms Hotel is Sydney in a beer garden. Sporting perhaps the best al fresco boozing in the Northern Beaches, if not the entire city, the Newport Arms is one not to be missed. It's an enormous venue, most of which is outside. There are three restaurants plus a cafe, as well as an outdoor cinema area for sports games or leisure viewing, and all are surrounded by water and/or have views to even more water. Yes, it could all be very much worse.

The booze list is another element not done by halves. Featuring no less than 18 beers on tap (in the main bar area), your biggest problem will be deciding where to start. Of course the local brews all stand tall among the imports, but take it as an opportunity to try something new and give your taste buds a treat. The wine list again has something for all the family. As with the dining options, you can go cheap and cheerful, or bust your budget in an instant. Either way, chances are you'll spark up a conversation on your possible cuisine choice with the bar staff or the friendly locals.

The Newport Arms is a true institution, and having stood the test of time since the 1880s, it's not hard to see why. It's definitely worth a detour, or even worth planning a trip purely to be here. Be warned, it's a good 45 minutes from the CBD, so come prepared if you're in for the long haul. Get here early in Summer if you're coming for lunch to avoid battling it out with local families and their extended loved ones.
