Drop by the Oaks Hotel for a true pub experience with a few expertly mixed cocktails on the side.

Editorial

The Oaks Hotel is something of an institution north of the bridge. Located on what is now a major thoroughfare, the Oaks claims to be built around a tree that was a popular meeting place back in 1885. Historically significant or otherwise, the Oaks is undeniably a great place for a beer or two, or a big Sunday feed when you need to erase Saturday night. The Oaks is a true pub's pub. Nothing too fancy here, which should come as a relief for those already skeptical about the North Side. Beers flow and the wine list offers a remarkably comprehensive list of drops by the glass. And unless you're really celebrating, none of them will break the bank. Bring it on.

The beers on tap are all stalwarts, but there's a good variety of imports in the fridge. Cocktails? Sure, but you'll need to drag yourself out from under the shade of the Oak tree and head upstairs to the venue's newest addition, Nineteenthirtysix. It's a new cocktail lounge that offers martinis, muddled drinks and more (ok, Pimms). It's slightly less rowdy than the beer garden and is perfect for those D&Ms. All in all, The Oaks is great for a Sunday arvo spritzer. There's plenty of room to spread out and a variety of spaces for that moment when ADHD emerges in us all. The crowd is casual and cool, but the rate of turned-up-collars and boat shoes is higher than usual. And yes, the oak tree is still standing - it's out the back in the beergarden.
