Kyushu Japanese Restaurant

A hive of activity on any given night, this North Shore eatery offers reasonably priced, fresh Japanese food. Try the sumai crab dumplings, preceded by some miso soup, of course.

Editorial

In a quiet back street in Neutral Bay sits a noisy restaurant, always full of atmosphere and patrons. The glass-fronted room allows you to see just how busy the restaurant is, however if it's a Thursday, Friday or Saturday night there's no need to check, it's full. The good news is, they do take bookings, and if you do have to wait, the Oaks Hotel is only a hop, skip and a jump away.

Mainstream Japanese cuisine is the order of the day; it's well priced, good quality and served in portions to share. Start with the pork maki: thin fillets of pork wrapped around shallots, shallow fried until crisp outside and covered in a luscious, sweet sauce. Shitake mushrooms are another good starter to share; the caps are filled with minced meat and quickly fried. For the main course, you can't go past one of the teriyaki dishes, the octopus and fish particular favourites. The marinating sauce is sweet and sticky, yet cut well by the traditionally dressed salad. The wafuu steak is also a good main, although the quality of the cut of meat can vary. The service can leave a little to be desired, but well priced Japanese cuisine is pretty hard to come by in Sydney and this restaurant certainly delivers on that front.
