Sporting a new owner and decor, McMahons Point favourite, Lavender Blue, has transformed from a casual all-day restaurant into an all-occasion dining starlet.

Editorial

In its life as a friendly but slightly-outdated restaurant on the leafy Blues Point Road, Lavender Blue was a place where locals would head for a casual breakfast, lunch or dinner . Since being taken over and shaken up earlier this year, it has become a stylish venue that not only draws the hungering crowds but all manner of celebrating ones. With a banquette-lined open front that looks onto Blues Point Road, and a bright, breezy open dining room under chandeliers of white flower cut-outs, the space embodies spring...no matter the time of year. Its open plan also gives it an advantage over the many terrace-based restaurants on the street, as a good venue for weddings, corporate functions and product launches.

The food experience begins with a shining coffee machine and jars of loose-leaf artisan tea. From this you can guess that the owner is a connoisseur. In fact his previous venture, Dolce Espresso in Oatley was voted best coffee shop in St George last year. Having left it behind, he brings his brewing talents to the new restaurant venture, Lavender Blue. His coffees are a great way to start breakfast and act as a great side to the multitude of sweet and savoury options, such as Atlantic poached eggs (which come served with homemade brioche, Tasmanian smokes salmon and hollandaise sauce). For lunch, the menu moves into modern Australian territory with salads, pastas and Turkish bread and other typically-cafe style favourites. In the evening, dinner service sees the lunch menu extend into options like braised pork hock cannelloni with sauteed mushrooms, green asparagus and smoked jus and house-cured salmon rillettes with wild rocket and sourdough crostini. There is a small wine list that offers food pairing suggestions. But, just as it started, the experience is best finished with coffee.
