When somebody mentions that the team behind China Doll - Woolloomooloo's super-popular modern Asian restaurant - is at it again, ears prick up, calendars get cleared and a general sense of anticipation builds up. And rightly so! Mai Busayarat and Grant Burtenshaw's latest project, China Beach, is well worth the fuss and more. Having opened in May, it greets diners with ocean views and dazzling white decor that plays on beach and Asian themes. Stark white walls, white tables, white chairs, white cushions and white paper lanterns create a breezy ambience while a vibrant red service area and a mosaic floor provide fun bursts of colour.
Like the decor, the food and drink menus like to mix things up. Begin your experience with a signature cocktail - perhaps a “white jasmine” or the punchier “fist full of Yen”. With that decision behind you, lend your thinking power to the cuisine selection. Do not be fooled: while the menu is concise, each dish is confusingly tempting and the servings are large, so you'll probably only need one entree and one main between two people. Then again, with entrees like whitebait, house-smoked quail and san choy bau and mains like twice-cooked free-range duck with sweet tamarind, crispy eschalots and lychee sauce, wok-fried prawns with phong gari spice, coconut cream, baby corn and curry leaf, and nasi goreng (Indonesian fried rice with prawns pork, green peas and prawn crackers), you may prefer to stretch your stomach for a night. If you leave room, you may also like to indulge in one of the tempting deserts like sago pudding…or maybe another cocktail?
