Warm Leichhardt restaurant Osvaldo Polletti may be small in size, but its menu is bursting with big, bold southern Italian flavours.

Editorial

Rubbing elbows with restaurants and cafes along the Norton Street strip, this small neighbourhood eatery dishes up big, bold southern Italian flavours. Step off the street and into this intimate, cosy space for rustic home-style cooking that doesn't compromise on flavour. Opened in 2007, Osvaldo Polletti is open for dinner from Monday through to Saturday and offers a private dining room for functions. You may recognise the animated Franco Napoliello from Bar Sport down the road, and here you'll find his wife Robyn Touchard rattling the pans in the kitchen. The Osvaldo Polletti menu changes on whim, much of it verbal, so ask Franco for the kitchen's current specials. The minimal dining room looks out onto Norton Street - but it's the staff and food that create its warm, welcoming atmosphere.

Bold flavours and simple combinations please the palate, while Italian and regional New South Wales wines fill the glass. Start with the popular olive fritte - fried olives stuffed with goat's cheese - or fork into an entree of baked semolina gnocchi. Spaghetti alla norma con polpette, studded with meatballs, eggplant, tomato and salted ricotta, is a common addition to the menu - and for very good reason. Other mains might include skewered herb and bread veal rolls with fresh figs and Vincotto, and grain-fed chicken baked with chestnuts. And what better way to end the meal than with a rich, creamy Italian tiramisu? Yum!
