Berkelouw Wine Bar combines vintage books with vintage wine to create a truly unique experience.

Editorial

The first question that springs to mind upon entering the new Berkelouw Wine Bar is, WHAT TOOK SO LONG? Surely there is no better combination than beautiful wines surrounded by several hundred years worth of books, and all to a crooning soundtrack in the heart of Leichardt. It's like entering the drawing room of a very wealthy, 1920's bachelor - you'll leave feeling like you've had a weekend at a health farm.

Berkelouw established itself as a purveyor of all things bookish and arty quite some time ago now, and since expanding into the cafe world in the early 2000s has finally added a bar to its Leichardt HQ - the results are outstanding. To top it off, the Berkelouw management team has a conscience too. Featuring a particular wine region every season (Orange, NSW for Summer 2009-2010 et cetera), the menu offers an array of delights from three local boutique wineries, and keeps things uncomplicated with detailed explanations so even the wine philistines can sound like they know what they're talking about. If that's all too hard, the staff are polished and amiable, and obviously appreciate the beauty of a good wine as much as the next person. The corresponding bar snacks are equally enticing, reasonably priced and delicious. Of course they're organic too - this is Leichardt after all.

Come on a rainy, Sunday arvo to fully appreciate what Berkelouw has to offer. Sit back with one of the vintage tomes and pretend to read as you drink in the atmosphere, and make sure you've secured a comfy seat for when the live music starts for the evening. Don't bring anyone who's likely to yap in your ear all night.
