The Cross’s groovy alternative for those who like a touch of Paris with their night out.

Editorial

Like a decadent home away from home, Tonic Lounge is just the, er, tonic. This two-storey Victorian terrace houses an unpretentious bar for 30-somethings who want to blow off some steam without having to spend half their week's wages.

The décor switches between a decidedly French manor-house feel with plush couches, antique lamps and gold framed pictures to a more bohemian look that is equally suitable. The place is comfortable and cosy and its decidedly Left Bank Paris setting, which does lend itself to a more laid-back atmosphere, is quite deceiving. Do not be fooled! The laid-back vibe is just for starters. Oh yes, the party will get started.

While couples may begin their evening here with a quiet drink, the atmosphere changes as the night goes on, with a steady stream of regulars who know they are assured a good time.

Music-wise, you better believe they take themselves seriously. The DJs are perfectly matched to their timeslots. From deep funk to soul to disco to jazz, you are guaranteed to have your spirits lifted most nights. In fact, regulars and blow-ins alike know this is the place to come if you need to bust a move.

The drinks are reasonably priced, and be prepared to take several minutes to wade through the extensive beer list. The cocktail list is also impressive. The good news here is that they actually know how to make a decent cocktail too.

Six years on Tonic is still going strong and shows no signs of ailing.

You said it Mr Geoff Stanton! Couldn't agree more, had my 30th at this venue recently and need to tell the world how perfect it was, like throwing the best house party and leaving someone else to clean up at the end of the night!
