The Sugarmill

Sneakers or stilettos, this Boho fusion of pub and late night bar is welcome in a recent push for Kings Cross to have better venues with a bit more class. This elegantly restored former bank graces us with something timeless and tasteful that is comfy anytime of day or night.

Editorial

You can still pop across the street for a nudie show and a bucket of hot greasy chips, but thank god there is a choice nowadays! Kings Cross has needed this for sometime and it fits all the required bills. Slide into a fat leather booth and get your heart started with a Tokyo Amigo: a shot of cuervo tequila with a bloody mary chaser with a side of wasabi. Wow! You can’t get that in a strip club, unless maybe in Tokyo somewhere.

High ceilings grace this establishment. Warm and tactile antique ochre wall tiling, peeling paint and brown vintage leather studded booths make this timeless, tasteful and not too fussy or intimidating. We are still in the Cross, after all. Feel free to take slip your stilettos off after a hard days night and tuck into All Day Breakfast at around $12.

Sugarmill has “We love Indie” nights and frequent comedy shows, which keep the place ticking over with more than just quenching thirsts. The wine list is modest but well-priced reds will keep you sitting pretty.

Aside from the all day breakfast there is the usual pub fare – burgers and pastas plus chef’s specials. This is all by far the best value for blocks around. And happily they aren’t just catering to tourists with over-priced plates of blandness - so common in the Cross a few years back. The bar has been raised! It’s now up to us to step up to the plate!
