Mandalay Room
Editorial
The Mandalay Room has gained itself something of a reputation in Sydney for being particularly reflective of life in the Cross. It has bouncers the size of tanks and a bar the size of a swimming pool, where the patrons can regularly come in and almost literally drown themselves.
The Mandalay Room, like most bars in Kings Cross, attracts a diverse clientele. There are the locals who've been in front of the big screens since 11am, the out-of-towners who are doing a pub crawl through the area, and the inevitably well-heeled glamours who totter in either en route or coming back from somewhere slightly more kosher. The crowd gives this bar a transient feel, which makes it perfect for blending into the decor and settling in for a night of good old-fashioned people watching. The biggest draw card by far is the semi-strip job performed in a huge glass water tank in the centre of the bar. It's supposed to happen every Friday and Saturday night, but you can spend hours waiting around for the spectacle. It's well worth it if you can catch it.
The bar service is fast and friendly and there a handful of cocktails to choose from, although you get the feeling that Reschs and house-spirits far out-sell anything else available. A fun place to pop into, but definitely not one for the family.
