Iguana Bar & Restaurant
Editorial
For those who tend to find themselves in the back streets of Kings Cross late at night on a weekend, Iguana Bar will be something of an icon. This crumbling relic of the 80s party scene certainly isn't glamorous, and the drinks are damned pricey, but what it excels at is staying open - very late indeed. Or should that count as very early, considering its post-dawn status?
The owners of Iguana Bar know that this is no destination haunt - its own website declares that it's a good place to start the night (not so much) and also a great place to finish your partying - still not so much, but by the time you're paralytic it is certainly one of the few places still open, willing to let you in, and full of 'interesting' characters. They also serve food pretty late if you need some emergency sobriety fuel - which you most certainly do if you end up here.
With three separate bar areas, and also a private function room, there are plenty of opportunities to get your hands on the demon grog, and just as many to make a fool of yourself on the dance floor. The back bar is where the real hardcore hang out, and it's also where the mural explaining the bar's name resides. And yes, the least said about what the iguana is doing to that girl, the better. Probably a good mantra for whatever happens after dark at the Iguana too.
