UNSW Roundhouse
Editorial
There are several genres of architecture: great, good, indifferent, bad and the just plain brutal. Buildings on college campuses less than a few thousand years old sometimes belong to the last club, and the Roundhouse at UNSW is definitely a fully signed-up life member of this one. It is round and has a twin next door called, intriguingly, the Square House ?? which is square. Don't go there. Don't you dare. Let's find the architect and ask him why, oh, why, before we shoot him.
The Roundhouse is, however, making the best of someone else's excruciatingly bad job and is a serious music venue which has had some of the most impressive line-ups of this century and the last (is there anywhere INXS hasn't played?), plus some energetic student activities and general fun nights.
This is a student gig, but one which also allows mere mortals to attend, and if you can cope with the hideous brickwork and one of the most disgusting patterned carpets in human history you can see some of the best bands, at the lowest prices and with some of the cheapest drinks in Sydney. The management, ARC, are a rare item who really know what they're doing and deserve a big round of applause (special mention for the Gold-Star event coordinator) and they definitely deserve some better brickwork ? and a decent carpet . Well, we all do. Check the website for what's going down and then get down there.

I've been to a couple of events at the Roundhouse this year. Looks like they've had a renovation, because the awful carpet has been replaced, and their beer garden is quite pretty. I saw Grinspoon in March and they were amazing, and then we went to Arj Barker last week - sooooo funny, I love him!
