Covent Garden Hotel
Editorial
The Covent Garden Hotel is something of an icon in Sydney's Chinatown. Having stood in the same spot and traded under the same name since the turn of the century, this one is about as old school as you get this far south of The Rocks district. Essentially it's a classic boozer. There's a big bar, with big chairs, big ceilings and a big load of beers. Its recent refurbishment have lifted the interior to be very slightly more competitive in this age of Manhattan-style wine bars and boutique beer gardens. But at the end of the day, the Covent Garden is much more about bangers and mash than fois gras and foam. And it's refreshing.
Beers are available mostly on tap. The most exotic brew you're likely to find is Coopers Pale, but there are a few surprising finds in the fridge, including the usual premiums as well as the odd Asian specialty. There's also a great special on the Beer of the Month, and if you must, Karaoke kicks off at 8:30pm on Friday and Saturday nights, and 5pm on Sundays.
The Covent Garden is great for a good time, but not a long time. Come here for some pre drinks if you're hitting the town elsewhere and don't worry about dressing up for the occasion. It's relaxed, easy on the eye and heritage listed. What's not to love?
