Toxteth Hotel
Editorial
If you want to feel the leaf-ruffling spirit that soughs through Glebe on a sunny day, then the Toxteth's beer garden isn't a bad place to start. The colourful mural of Glebe Point Road, the ivy languidly climbing the wall, the wide sweep of glass doors that open onto the bistro - it all evokes a spaciously pastoral feel (despite the large stainless steel canopy that hovers over the tables) which happily contributes to one's selfless enjoyment of a cold beverage.
Smartly done up in a vivid floral decor and neat steel trimmings, the bistro behind the beer garden's glass frontage enjoys a popular trade and the food is good, with some very generous lunch specials during the week. Steaks are the speciality of the house, with chargrilled petite eye fillet, sirloin or rump. There is also a good range of Australian wines on the list.
Unfortunately the atmosphere in the front lounge has become a little addled. A walled-in settee dominates the main space (replacing some pool tables now relegated to a back room), while all other doors appear to lead to a large gaming lounge. Luckily this is tucked away behind walls and doesn't drown proceedings. Overall, the relaxed atmosphere of this watering hole has been a friendly lure for local crowds, backpackers and casual drinkers alike for many years now. There is also an enormous projector screen that is hauled down for sporting events in the beer garden, along with free internet and games for the kids.
