Friend in Hand Hotel
Editorial
Like a bit of an international crowd? Don’t mind a few Swedish backpackers scattered about the place? Well the Friend in Hand is the right place for you. Located in the heart of Glebe, The Friends is Glebe’s oldest hotel, and also the Winner of “Sydney’s Best Pub” in 2010. The name is also the vibe – friendly with a capital ‘F’.
Close to the Glebe markets, the Friend is a great place to drop in after you’re all done shopping and need to kick back with a few mates. From the outside the Friend looks a lot like other Sydney pubs – art deco architecture and Big Beer™ branding (read: Toohey’s signs all over the place). But step inside and you’ll feel welcomed in to your home-away-from-home with the plethora of knick-knacks and bric-a-brac scattered all over - the décor here is eclectic and fun, inviting the weary traveller to linger awhile.
Beers on tap include James Squire, Fat Yak, Pure Blond, Bulmer’s Cider, Resches, Guinness and your usual Aussie faves such as Tooheys and Fosters. There is also a decent wine list along with a scattering of none-to-challenging cocktails. But the fun at the Friend is really in the extra-curricular activities: life drawing, poetry readings, crab racing, and stand up comedy – making this little pub a well-rounded entertainment venue with lots of stuff to do if you’re not into the pokies.
The Fork in Hand is the in-house restaurant serving home style meals – good and hearty and cheap – well made pub food, along with a kids menu for the little ones. Prices for drinks and food are very reasonable, making the Friend a fun and good value for money night out.
