A glance at the kitsch decor in the Different Drummer indicates this venue marches to a very different drum.

Editorial

This is just gorgeous. And very Glebe, with a bit of everything for everyone, but in an elegant and well-mannered way - even the smokers' yardette (tiny - you're a dying breed) is a sight to behold.

Only if you have an aversion to bricks should you stay away: exposed brickwork is the order of the day over three floors, and this makes for a lovely, chocolatey evening ambience, well suited to smooching or just chewing the fat. The ?beautiful people' come here for tapas, impressive wines and nice cocktails or beers, plus some decent tunes which comprise mellow, laid-back stuff during the week and upbeat, young person's, leg-twitching noisiness on the weekend. Some bars do actually get it right, and this is at least one and a half of them.

Apart from the irritating name (old H. D. Thoreau has a lot to answer for) and a mere suspicion of Melbourne-itis (read: high self-esteem), it's a challenge to find fault with this place. It's a welcoming haven for a broad spectrum of well-dressed punters - no ageism, sexism or any other ism here, thank you very much. Another nice thing is that it isn't part of a chain and the guy who owns it also runs it - he'll even come over for a chat if he's around - ask for David. Builders, iron your KingGees and drop by to check out the pointing (delicate and symmetrical, pretty good brick stock too); everyone else, glad rags on and head off for a warm and friendly evening - it should be one to remember.
