Rose of Australia
Editorial
What a simple pleasure it must be to have a genuinely classy local pub, where everything just works - where the bar staff are friendly, the food is great, there's a beer on tap for all tastes, and all sorts of people rub shoulders and seem to know each other. Erskineville, or ??Erko', as it's known to locals and intruders from elsewhere, is a small village-style satellite of Newtown, featuring several, very different pubs, and The Rose is the pick of them.
Nobody ever drives to the Rose. It's one of those small inner-city bars where all the patrons live within walking distance. Most of them like to sit outside on the footpath, almost in the traffic of Swanson street, and enjoy a few soothing ales in the late afternoon. The wizened experts in such things will tell you that the Guinness on tap at The Rose is better than most other venues. There is a top range of a dozen or so beers on tap, and a good supporting cast by the bottle as well.
Those who don't like exhaust fumes in their drink prefer to sit inside around the bar itself, which has a nice atmosphere and cheery service. The main area is carpeted and clean, and presents original features, such as the tiled walls, very nicely. Occasionally there will be a blues or jazz band taking up one corner of the room, but the Rose is generally always chat-friendly.
In the rear of the pub you'll find the small bistro area, which is priced on the rather steep side and caters for the more upmarket element of the crowd. There are cheaper alternatives to be found served over the bar, which are just fine and easier on the pocket.
