Golden Barley Hotel
Editorial
A big old friendly pub with plenty of characters, Enmore's Golden Barley Hotel wears its heart on its sleeve. There are no fancy thrills here - it's a proper old school pub, where you can get a nice cold beer, play some tunes on the jukebox, shoot some pool and fail terribly at the general knowledge pub trivia. Divided into two bars, the main room is the most bustling, with big screens, pool tables and aright, airy feel. or you can move on through to the lounge with more of a retro, art deco feel to it and a more ambient atmosphere. Indeed, the beautiful building itself is a bona fide example of Art Deco style, erected as it was back in 1939. There are little flashes of the style throughout. Sunday afternoon sees the pool table set at $1 all day, so expect plenty of friendly rivalry, with Friday night happy hour meaning $3 Carlsberg and sparkling wine. There's a bottle shop patched if you want to take it on home, and a TAB too. What the Golden Barley has going for it big time is that it's fiercely local. All the bar staff will remember your name and your drink, and the owners live upstairs. It's clear they give a hoot about their business, and the warmth of character shows through. There's not many pubs can lay claim to that these days, so it’s definitely worth dollars showing them some support.
