East Village
Editorial
The East Village, something of a Sydney icon, has transformed itself over the years - rather like the neighbourhood surrounding it. Now the epicentre of design studio heaven, this was once a very rough part of town, and the then-Tradesman's Arms was a seriously dodge place indeed. All guns, gangsters, girls and gambling, you wouldn't necessarily want to be there - well maybe you would, if you're one of those Underbelly wannabes; but things are definitely much more chi-chi and less bloodstained now.
The East Village has a plethora of fancy function rooms and there seems to be a never-ending procession of cool events going on here - fantastic if you're on the guest list, but a little wearying perhaps for the locals who are continually corralled into the downstairs bar. Still, they aren't overlooked, with the standard trivia session on Tuesdays and salsa class on Wednesday and Thursday nights.
If you can get up onto the roof terrace, then that's where things really come into their own, with simply stunning views of the Sydney skyline, complete with spectacular sunsets. So grab yourself an Amaretto Sour, head for the heights and make like the most glamorous guest on the list.
