The Rowers
Editorial
A wide open and breezy, bright room in the sharp style of the modern RSL or sports club, The Rowers is a smartly presented venue, perched right on the shore of Iron Cove, at the west end of Sydney Harbour. Apparently this was once a busy and boisterous party zone, but these days it's a more refined and upmarket family friendly environment. Although, if you turn up around 6pm and you're under 50, you'll probably be the youngest person in the place!
The interior is mainly filled with small tables and comfortable chairs for four, while the benches and stools near the bar are preferred by those with an eye on the races. The spacious outdoor deck area gives drinkers and diners a magnificent view across the water towards Rodd Island and Leichhardt Oval. The Rowers is situated directly under the flight path, so the air traffic can be slightly piercing at times, but it doesn't detract from the ambience too much. Certainly the best boat shed in town and a terrific spot for a long Sunday lunch and several cleansing ales.
The local rowers and boaties seem to have the run of the place, but if you prefer bending your arm in a less strenuous fashion, you'll find 10 beers on tap, including the pleasant offerings of Becks and Carlsberg, and a comprehensive list of excellent Australian wines. The adjoining Aqua Vista restaurant is classy but not pretentious, with excellent service and distinctive Mediterranean style mains around the $26 mark.
Genuine rowers can disembark at the platform below by the waters edge, but it's highly recommended to put your boat shoes and polo shirt on, and sail in via the ferry from Circular Quay to Birkenhead Point. A classy and tranquil experience all round.
