Vinothek
Editorial
Wow, Vinothek is certainly something different. Perhaps one of the only purely German/Austrian wine (and beer) bars in the inner east, Vinothek serves up a ready supply all of things Saxon, and in a comfortable environment to boot. The focus seems to be wine, although the menu does boast a collection of exclusive brews, delivered fresh from an (undisclosed) Prince's private brewery. Which might explain why the selection is somewhat limited. The standard is the Schloss Gold, which is a lager of the highest quality. There's also a Schloss wheat beer and Schloss Trunk (Castle drink). The dubiously noted ??something different' option seems to be the most alluring choice: A classic, unfiltered lager complete with sediment. Most definitely worth a try for the purists, just don't expect much change from a blue note.
The wine list is much more comprehensive, featuring a staggering 34 whites alone. For those who generally associate the Germans with beers, the Moselle and Rhine Valley regions produce some of the best sweet whites going. The Golter 2007 Traminer and Riesling is delicious, and one of the most reasonably priced. If you really like stickies, you must try the awe-inducing Lauermann and Weyer - Kirschwein, a particular variety made exclusively from cherries. You'll be on a sugar high for a week.
Vinothek is undoubtedly an excellent addition to the Crown Street drinking strip, but some may find the prices slightly prohibitive and traditional German bar snacks a bit unappealing. Nevertheless, it's great for something different and is definitely worth a try for wine lovers.
