Velvet
Editorial
Velvet, at the Beauchamp Hotel, is a subterranean scene designed for trend setters and trend trackers alike. With an emphasis on cool and an even greater emphasis on cocktails, there's not much to poo-poo at this tiny underground bar. Basically, it's very, very sexy. The name says it all. Rich drapery and racy lighting make for a most intimate affair and the tunes being piped through the walls help too; groovy enough to have a sway but not to the point of distraction. That's what the drinks are for. Velvet has taken it upon itself to offer one of the best selections of hard liquor around, including an impressive list of over 17 tequilas, 22 rums and a sobering 46 vodkas. Yes, Velvet is here for a good time.
The cocktails are both classic and innovative, featuring the requisite trendy mixers such as elderflower, cucumber, pomegranate, tea and artisan syrups. Mixed and muddled, shaken and stirred with aplomb, Velvet has made it a mission to be way ahead of the fine drinking game. A few tips though, the wait for a mixed drink can be a sombre affair, and the menu turns over reasonably quickly according to seasons and availability. So don't go in hoping for that acai berry and blood orange mojito if it's been more than six months between drinks. There's wine too, available by the glass and bottle, but when there's nearly 50 varieties of vodka on offer...
Finally, Velvet keeps itself nice by only opening to the public on Friday and Saturday nights. If you want to bring all your friends you'll need to book, and if someone's booked out the space before you, it'll be your bad luck on the night. It's sexy, dressy, very cool and dripping with cash. Wear your best shoes.
