Slide
Editorial
Slide is not for the faint-hearted. It's a slick new(ish) establishment which seemed to enter the Oxford street groove at a time when burlesque couldn't be too ubiquitous, and open gas torches were the height of cool. It's the wonderful love child of an orgy of clubbers, gangsters, cabaret artists and Sydney's effervescent gay community. It's as open to possibilities as you want it to be, so gird your loins and enter the labyrinth of good times at your own risk.
Cabaret is performed most Wednesday and Thursday nights. The website holds all the details, so you can keep an eye on what's on, and what's coming up. You can also sit back and sample the hugely varied bistro menu, which consists of everything from seared sesame and nori encrusted tuna, to gamey terrine and three-cheese souffl?. Some would call it inconsistent; others would call it crowd pleasing. Whatever, chances are slim you won't find something to tickle your fancy.
Likewise with the drinks. Part French Riviera and part Ibiza, you're just as likely to see a drag performer walking around with a Champagne and Chombard as you are a 20-year-old PR worker with a glass of chardonnay. The best thing about Slide is that you are more than welcome to do completely as you please where drinks are concerned - an area where the staff are only too accommodating. For anything else, beware of helping hands.
