Rambutan
Editorial
Named after the oddly furry, pillar box red Thai fruit which bursts open with exotic flavours, Rambutan's 'Tiki" Bar is an perhaps odd meld of cultural ideas on the surface, invoking as it does a Polynesian twist. Whatever the heritage, the cross works surpassingly well.
This sleek, slate-floored space on the ground level, below the tip top restaurant, is pretty slick. Fabric walls, a glowing amber bar and bronzed bamboo wallpaper all lend a modern touch to some ancient design sensibilities. The picture framed fresh water fish tank is another knowing touch, and Buddha presides over it all.
Where the real art comes into play is the frankly mouthwatering cocktail menu. Those with a sweet tooth may opt for the rambutan and lavender lollipop martini, with equal parts Absolut Vodka and Plymouth Gin, as well as a handful of candied goodies. Or perhaps a coconut and kaffir lime Daiquiri carnival for a sharper taste sensation?
The service is impeccable, the crowds are beautiful, and of course there's always the wonderfully tasty restaurant upstairs if you feel you need to soak up the cocktails a little.
