OneSixNine
Editorial
Another gay bar, just what Sydney needs right? With Sydney's queer population increasing - and increasingly diversifying, well, another gay bar is not out of the question at all. In fact, for many it seems, OneSixNine, and Haus, its Friday night event is just what they've been waiting for.
Inspired by the New York underground ball scene, which was exemplified in the 1990 film, Paris is Burning, Haus creator, choreographer and performer Will Sabin, says his club is all about fantasy. While the majority of punters at Haus perhaps don't put the effort into their attire as Sabin would like, there is enough pageantry and drag queens who have indeed evoked ball culture to give Haus an edge over neighbouring Oxford Street bars.
Each week there's a new theme which influences the type of shows and the venue's décor. Previous themes have included: Haus of Circus, Haus of Hollywood and of course, Haus of Gaga. Most Friday nights see a fairly mixed crowd in terms of age groups - yes twinks can happily co-exist with gay lads who still dare to venture out in their thirties. There's often a few girls too, but, it's the muscle marys and drag queens who take centre stage here.
In terms of the venue, OneSixNine is a stylish space and those suede booths are a joy to lounge around in. Soft lighting is so considerate of them too. There's a stellar line-up of DJs including Dan Murphy, Keenan, Coxy, JimJam and Greg Boladian and celebrity performers also make the occasional guest appearance.
An outrageous costume will get you free entry (at the door bitch's discretion) and drag queens are spoilt with free cocktails between 10pm and midnight. For the rest of you, just be as 'faabulous' as you can.
