Kika Tapas Bar
Editorial
The Spanish really know how to make dinner a festive occasion and Kika Tapas is no different. Billowing orange curtains, colourful striped walls and mismatched water glasses create a cheerful atmosphere which the crowds of Darlinghurst flock to. Menus are laminated with old Spanish beauty magazine covers, feigning a scene of Spanish-fluent diners catching up on the latest Hollywood goss. Most tables will order classic plates of garlic prawns and grilled chorizo. Add the Lomo con Roquefort – thinly sliced barbecued eye fillet with shavings of blue cheese and topped with finely grated beetroot – and a tomato salad to balance out the rich flavours and you have yourself a flamenco inducing feast. For dessert the crema catalana is “like creme brulee but better because it’s Spanish”.
A lot of people salsa their way back to Kika, so to keep the menu fresh there are always new dishes to try. However, if you’re just stopping in for a drink, the Pinxto, or tiny tapas, will make your average wine time a little more unique. For $8 you can have a glass of wine or a beer and choose one mini tapas, such as tuna croquettes or olives, to accompany your tipple. $20 will get you and the troupes a jug of homemade sangria and three Pinxtos. There are tables out on the street but get in quick for these, because they’re very popular.
