Fish Face

places|nsw|darlinghurst|fish%20face
Possibly the hippest fish and chip spot in Sydney, this tiny space is always packed with rowdy patrons enjoying great seafood in myriad combinations.

Editorial

It does look a little like a fish and chip shop, with its narrow dining room and long stainless steel counter flanked with bar stools, but with such a flash-looking display kitchen, you know Fish Face are doing something special with their fish. Here you can watch the fish not only being deep-fried, but grilled, roasted, poached or sliced into sushi. There's room for none-too-many in the teensy, frequently noisy dining room, but there are a few outdoor tables and a takeaway service.

If you don't need your seafood cooked, start with the ultra-fresh sashimi plate, or the rock oysters with mignonette sauce and rye bread. Vegetarians could opt for the steamed asparagus, poached egg, parmesan and nut butter for entree. The bug salad with basil, shaved baby fennel and watercress is another impressive starter. For mains - yes, you can have your fish and chips with lashings of lemon and tartare, but there is a range of other excellent dishes including steamed bass groper with preserved lemon and snap peas, and blue eye on potato scales with beetroot and bacon vinaigrette. Bring along a crisp white or a light red and enjoy the BYO service. Corkage is $4.50 per person.

Great food and equally bad service! We had a booking at 7:30, and didn't eat until over an hour later. They offered to let us drink our wine on the sidewalk, next to the rubbish bins just behind us. We sat on the sidewalk with our wine for 35 minutes. The entree was very good (yes very small portions for the price, but I was HOPING to treat myself for my birthday and expected this). We had the pasta and a cuttlefish - both well cooked and great flavours. The mains were also very tasty and very well cooked. I had the blue eye with capers and orange zest. My partner had the kingfish (?) with beetroot and pancetta, a very well designed meal. However, the chips arrived half way through our mains and the water we asked for didn't arrive. They STILL charged the $10 corkage for 2 people after having to drink my wine on the sidewalk (near the rubbish bins) and waiting over 1 hour for our meals with a booking.

What a disappointment! We booked early & ordered by 7.30pm.They had already run out of 2 varieties of fish.I ordered mussels for entree, they arrived at the table in a casserole dish. The lid was removed & I expected the smell of 'roasted garlic' to waft up from the cooking juices. Not so as there was not much cooking going on!At least 2/3 of the mussels were closed & the few I tried I could not remove from the shell. When I complained the waiter could not have cared less. Our mains arrived, hapuka and mahi mahi,at least cooked correctly. No sooner had we finished & we asked to leave,it was 9.00pm,they had 8 people waiting outside for a table! The bill came, including the mussels,I complained and the head waitress came over & told me they always served extra mussels to make up for the ones that dont open (what!) but she agreed to 1/2 the cost to $9 (they were $18).We were glad to leave could not see any sign of the 8 people waiting for a table outside. Not impressed at all.
