Doctor Pong
Editorial
Remember Looney Tunes lovelorn French skunk, the eternally romantic and yet always whiffy Pepe Le Pew? He was a favourite of mine back in the days of early morning cartoons with muti-coloured kids cereal and my He-Man action figures scattered across the living room. Darlinghurst’s rather awesome Doctor Pong brings back this particular warm wave of nostalgia.
The logo, for one, is a skunk, and then there's that somewhat funny old name. Well let me tell you right off the bat, this place sure don’t stink. In fact it’s a very trendy style bar with a bag load of quirky character and a clientele that fits right in with such eclectic environs.
A rag tag jumble of worn leather chesterfields, tables made from packing crates, exposed brick walls and a bunker-like concrete bar, it’s a very cool space greatly enhanced by the crazy mural opposite the bar, featuring grazing giraffes. Amongst all the quirky coolness, including a random bike parked at the end of the bar, they’ve also somehow found room to squeeze in a ping pong table.
With a choice of Becks and Tooheys on tap, plus a big range of bottles and a good wine list, there's also a great bar menu make for long, contented evenings. $10 lunches, including a wagyu burger and beer battered fish and chips, are ideal for a well-fed work break too.
