Citysearch® 2010 Best in the City Winner: Best Queer Night Out!
A multimillion-dollar venue when it opened about a decade ago, Arq has long held the crown of the major gay venue of Sydney, and while some of the shine has rubbed off over the years, it's still considered to be one of the best gay clubs in town.
Arq has a prime location at the top of Taylors Square off Oxford Street, so plenty of clubbers do the rounds at the local bars before heading to Arq to get lost in the midst of sexy dancing boys and smoke machines.
The upstairs section, known as The Arena, has a huge dance floor, two bars, and a smoking area. While some of the punters in The Arena may look like extras from Gladiator, they are more likely to bust out a show tune than a Rusty impersonation. They also do quite a few major events up here, so there is also a cloakroom, commercial kitchen, stage and dress area for live music, dance and other acts.
The main downstairs area, called The Vortex, is just that - it's easy to get turned around in a muddle of Muscle Marys and get separated from your friends (as I always seem to do when I go) but then you'll just have to dance with some strangers until you find your nearest and dearest again. In fact, one friend suggested wearing matching cologne or neck scarves which, as you can imagine, went absolutely nowhere - in fact, I think he's probably straight.
Arq has hilarious theme nights such the FOMO world famous foam parties, Sunday School for naughty end of weekenders, or try out Dungeons and Drag Queens, where buff geeks run around under towering drags above, and the only slaughtering that goes on is at the bar.
