Almond bar's Syrian owners bring a touch of nut and spice to the standard cocktail list.

Editorial

Working a Middle Eastern theme, Almond Bar offers some spice in your life. The name derives from the ancient tradition of cultivating almonds in the Middle East - and the tasty nut features heavily in both the food and the cocktails on offer here.

Owned by Syrian sisters, the ladies know how to make you feel welcome. The food is home made and all about sharing and caring. Tasty mezza morsels mean heaps of yummy stuff piled on your table. The same attention to detail is borne out in the frankly ludicrously long cocktail menu.

Divided up into unusual segments, the cocktail list is darned impressive. 'Something different' includes the refreshing habibi with fresh lime, pama, vodka and sugar syrup, while 'nutty' features a tasty amaretto, malibu, orange and grenadine concoction. For those who like to stick to the tried and tested there's also an 'old school' selection. From there, it just keep going with 'sours', 'latinos' and 'liberators' amongst the many options.

There's also an awesome wine list to be had if you want to opt for something a little less alcoholic - but expect to pay top dollar. It's all worth it though, with beautiful wood partitioned surrounds, plush seating and great service.

Stephen Russell, August 2010.
