The Counter
Editorial
Are you a “instead of mushrooms can I have tomatoes? And please no sauce. And could I switch the vegetables for salad?” type of person? Then boy have we found something you can sink your teeth into. Basked in bright light, modern tunes and a groovy retro vibe vaguely reminiscent of “Grease”, The Counter is one cool place. It is also the burger restaurant answer to Bunning’s – or, in other words, ultimate burger DIY.
The concept is simple: total burger control. When you walk in you’re handed a clipboard with a checklist and a pencil. From here your fate is in your hands; you decide how you’d like to have your burger (between some buns or as a kind of bun-less salad), what kind of patty you’d like (chicken, turkey, beef or vegetarian), its size, the type of bun you’d like, which cheese (if any) you want and what toppings and sauces tickle your fancy. The toppings vary from the traditional like lettuce mix, grilled onion, tomato and beetroot to the more unusual like dried cranberries, fried eggs and jalapenos. The sauces share the creative streak with choices like ginger soy glaze, roasted garlic aioli and caramelised onion jam. Although the burgers are unlikely to leave you hungry, you can pair them with sides – onion strings anyone? What about potato or sweet potato chips? You may also want to go “half and half” and split the decision down the centre. If you don’t trust your burger-making abilities, below the checklist you’ll also find some pre-designed options to help you out. Finish off your meal with a milkshake (chocolate, strawberry or peanut butter), a “float” or a glass of wine or beer.
