The Basement
Editorial
The Basement is an institution in Sydney's vibrant music scene. Set up in the 70s to deliver a healthy dose of soul, jazz and funk to the groovy masses, the well-worn stage has been graced by such luminaries as Marcia Hines, and Dizzy Gillespie. The muscial influences haven't changed all that much over 30 years later either, and this is still a groovy place to get down.
It's a big small bar, cramming a fair few rowdy revellers into its friendly if sometimes constricted bosom. Most gigs are reasonably priced, with management maintaining an admirable focus on bringing live music to the masses. It's a no thrills bar with the focus on beer, wine and spirits, but the prices won't set you back too much, and there a pool table to show off your drunken skills too.
The best way to enjoy a gig is by booking in the dinner and a show option. That way you get the best views accompanied by some rather fine food too. A typical combination includes beef and vegetable spring rolls to start, followed by sirloin steak and béarnaise sauce. Life is rarely sweeter than when accompanied by great food, friends, drink and some sweet tunes.

The review above makes reference to the dancefloor. Be aware that this feature is not always open; if it is not, and the floor is taken up by dinner guests, you will not be able to see anything as all the other patrons are crammed around the sides with restricted views. Get there early and you might be able to see the musicians you've paid good money for; but you will be pushed in on all sides as others try in vain to catch glimpses of the stage.
