Editorial

Personally, the thought of a pub with no food horrifies me more than the thought of a pub with no beer. Even if a pub has no beer, there should still be plenty wine, spirits and those sickly sweet pre-mixed drinks to get stuck into; and concoctions like that definitely require food. Every good watering hole really needs to offer something to soak up the booze and The Rose Hotel in Chippendale has got it nailed. Standing on a corner of Cleveland Street, The Rose has been keeping thirsty locals, students and various bar-flies happy for about 100 years now. A dark and cosy bar flaunting traces of glamour from days gone by leads through to a massive courtyard where all the carousing is serenely regarded by stone cherubs who could probably do with a drink themselves.

The Rose Hotel is serious about their pub grub, offering a menu of pizzas and other tasty bits and pieces to drink to. Lunchtimes during the week draw a loyal gathering of local workers who come in for a $10 pizza and a shandy to get them through the afternoon. The pizza menu is vast, with calzones, vegetarian, seafood, chicken and meat pizzas available in a myriad of flavours. A mezze plate of dips or an antipasto plate is a good choice for those wanting something light to graze on while the daily specials menu has all your traditional pub staples such as chicken schnitzel, steak sandwiches and fish and chips covered. The Rose Hotel is ideal for Sunday cheeky ones; just grab a $10 jug of beer, some chatty mates and settle in to while away an afternoon.
