Shannon Hotel

A refurb has seen this old drinking hole become something of a new conteneder for your sun-drenched, beer garden hours.

Editorial

Hidden deep in the tumbler of Sydney's inner city this venue has provided digs for a choppy surplus of locals and backpackers, as well as the occasional student and itinerant office worker. But while those beer taps have diligently pumped amber for all-sorts, the atmosphere of this bar has had a reputation for wavering between life and death. In fact, most of the time it is really only the clatter around the pool table that provides any heartbeat for this loosely defined Irish Bar.

While it retains a few spare pieces of Irish paraphernalia on the walls - the stained-glass masterpiece in the corner could give you glaucoma - the latest bout of renovations announce a newer, cleaner look. The Shannon has actually scrubbed itself up rather well. But it is still the motley array of tenants who fill the blanks in - particularly when a morass of backpackers decide to descend upon the tiles. And when the bar begins to get a little rowdy the atmosphere actually isn't all that bad.

So we might as well ignore the new apricot coloured walls and concentrate on the drinking. The Guinness, for starters, is clean, cold and creamy. In the confines of the rear beer garden the Shannon now also sports a spanking new bistro, offering a range of standard pub fare - mainly steaks, but with a slight emphasis on seafood as well - all at decent prices. Live music can also be caught at the Shannon over the weekends.

The Shannon hotel caters for a mixture of locals and travelling Irish with some fantastic parties thrown in as well as supporting the local"NOTRE DAME" rugby union team and many a benefit cause to which the owner generously contributes. Because it essentially a locals bar with an owner who actually works in the pub 7 day's a week it has an easy going atmosphere and where pool, darts and conversation can take place. (No annoying Multiple sports Tellies) This combined with great service from the bar staff (Charlene and Enya provide that true mixture of of integration of Australian/Irish culture...A gem!!!! Am I a Biased local....YOU BET!!!
