Bar on the Hill is not only the social hub of the University of Newcastle’s Callaghan campus, but also one of Newcastle's premier entertainment venues.

Editorial

Bar on the Hill, at the University of Newcastle's Callaghan campus makes good the stereotype of a typical student hangout. Daggy carpet, bare bones decor, a stage strewn with mics, speakers and jumbled cords, and a clutter of mismatching chairs and tables. As one of the few bars on campus, it's no surprise this place is regularly teaming with thirsty punters. Luckily it's a fairly sizeable building. Its charm is certainly in the location - yes, it is indeed set on a hilltop, and it's surrounded by plenty of greenery - and a car park.

Serving a large selection of food and beverages, Bar on the Hill also doubles and triples for that matter as a popular venue for weddings and a variety of parties, ranging from formal dinners and balls to cocktail events and birthday parties. It has also hosted some of the best local and international acts, ranging from the wispy rock of Angus and Julia Stone, to The Beautiful Girls, CW Stoneking, Kisschasy, Ben Kweller and the frenetic Frenzal Rhomb.

A wide verandah hugs the Bar on the Hill building - perfect for grabbing a stack of mates and checking out the lunchtime lawn gigs - of which there are many, naturally. Testament to its standing and reputation in NSW music circles, Bar on the Hill is one of the more rocking venues in Newcastle, and continues to enjoy a healthy roster of touring bands.

In keeping with its university surrounds, Wednesday nights are dedicated party nights, and then there's the annual O Week, Autonomy Day and Beach Party to look forward to. For those worried about where their next meal will be coming from, there's plenty of fine food served up by the Bar on the Hill cafe - and in another nod to student surrounds, the price is quite nice.

I love this place so much, the review really nails the student vibe! Angus and Julia rocked! Nice one.
