This cafe on upper Bondi Road is the haunt of locals, artists and laid-back funksters.

Editorial

The first visit to Katipo is always a fascinating experience because there is just so much to look at. It’s choc-full of mismatched second hand furniture and bric-a-brac, the art and posters for gigs gracing the walls compete for your attention, and then there’s the people – a colourful motley crew of cool, beachy, arty, laid-back Bondi locals. So Melbourne? Not quite. Owners Craig Jones and Kerry Swatridge are New Zealand expats who have brought a little bit of that Kiwi cafe culture with them. Their aim is to create a local community feel that people habitually return to; a relaxed, social place to fill a niche they found was lacking in the Sydney cafe scene.

The concept behind the menu is educational – instead of mixing‘n’matching they encourage you to try new combinations and creations. The menu has some interesting items like a range of eggs Benedicts and a hippy vego feast, but the real talent is in the weekly specials. Here you can see the creativity at work with some great value items like the scram special (eggs scrambled with various yummy ingredients) for $7.50. What you won’t find are sandwiches and freshly squeezed juices, you’ll have to go to the cafe across the road for that. But for a consistently good coffee, the Artecaffe blend is smooth as.
