See beautiful people reflected through the highly-polished facets of this Bondi gem.

Editorial

If you are unfeasibly young with impossibly good skin and glossy locks that rise from bed camera-ready, then you already know about this place.  The rest of us imperfect lot are probably sitting in one of the Junction’s more poorly lit old-man pubs.

The Ruby Lounge is not the sort of place one frequents on a Fat Day, a Bad Hair Day or on any day when one is over thirty.  Here, find the sort of unapologetic, spray-tanned glamour for which the eastern suburbs are admired and despised.

This bar with its pre-fab opulence feels almost recession proof.  In fact, with its bull market chutzpah, it feels, post 2008, almost a little retro.  Here, the grandchildren of the “Greed is Good” mantra act as though the crash never happened.

And, for them, it probably didn’t.  It’s hard to believe that anyone who drinks at this cocktail and dance bar is old enough to drive let alone command a share portfolio.

While an appearance of wealth dominates, a flurry of Happy Hour discounts speaks to the market reality. Then, at least, you can pretend to be as well-to-do as the interior design suggests. Or, you could trade your skinny jeans for something a little more comfy and go seek out one of the Junction’s poorly lit old-man pubs.

SM King, June 2010.
