Bungabar
Editorial
Huddled in a perfect storm of bamboo, fairy lights and tequila, this little bar on Hall Street is the quintessence of chilled, urban tiki. Where else but in Bondi could you drink in a thatched hut hidden under a salty old apartment block and get away with it? But this adds to the Bungabar's charm. It casts those degrees of light and shade, which give the exotic mix of beach and town that Bondi is so celebrated for.
The string of flags and the wall of photos give this little hideaway something of the internationalist feel, which is perfectly geared towards the exotic twist of the menu. The cocktail menu provides a meeting point for many an opposing tastebud (which will be good news for some). The cocktails have a free trade with the exotic: The Moroccan Queen (coconut liqueur shaken with vodka and muddled with pineapple), Mexican cosmopolitan (tequila, Cointreau, fresh lime and cranberry juice) and wildberry caprioska (berry mix muddled with limes, shaken with vodka) will give you an idea of where you're drifting.
The food follows suite with a voracious and tempting list of Mexican tapas. Tiger prawns in saffron, wine and garlic sauce are a good start. The size of this venue is right for either an intimate gathering or a table full of friends. And, although ?chilled out' is the catchword of the day, don't be fooled. This venue is popular and on the weekends the jugs flow over.
