There are no airs and graces at the Beach Road, but plenty of colour and movement.

Editorial

The Beach Road Hotel is something of an institution in Sydney's backpacking east. Somewhat of a crumbling institution at that, the place is a bit shabby and run down. It's not one for the quiet drink with a best friend - more mass getting off chops with the crew. The venue is fairly huge, with different floors/bars catering to different music styles, from more commercial pop to full on old school rock. The crowd is definitely young and sprightly.

Just off the main drag, it's not the total backpacker magnet that some other Bondi venues have proven to be, but it does get pretty damn chocka on the weekends. Tuesday nights mean live local bands, with a particularly devoted following, but gigs or DJ sets are fairly common on most evenings.

The Beach Road wears its heart on its sleeves. It's a real back-to-basics haunt, with local beers on tap, a fairly standard wine list and pub grub that's cheap and cheerful. Sunday mornings mean sausage sizzles when the weather's good. Sport is huge, with big screens showing the cricket, rugby. AFL and whatever else is going at the time. The website is bang up to date with music and sport listings, and for those of a more social networking bent, the myspace page presents all gig info.

If you're after an old school local that gets rowdy with the youngsters and has no airs and graces about itself, then get into the Beach Road. And if you get too drunk to head home, you can always crash in the reasonably priced accommodation upstairs.
