Town Hall Hotel
Editorial
The Town Hall Hotel is something of a Balmain special. It claims to have been around for 130 years, and fortunately for them there's no one left to contest it. But why would you? Anyone worth their salt wouldn't give two hoots about the age of the Townie - it's a beaut pub. Besides that, the 2.5m sports screen and pumping sound system are both not-so-subtle nods to the convenience of the 21st century.
Spread over two levels, most will find that the Balcony Bar upstairs tends to draw the hipper crowd. Its biggest drawcard? The balcony: huge and welcoming, it's the perfect spot for relaxing in the sun with an afternoon brew, and even better for just watching the wonderful world of Balmain roll by. Plus, timing permitted, the Townie puts on an excellent happy hour where you can get cut price cocktails and fondue. Woo hoo!
The cocktails are all standards, so if you still love nothing more than a Strawberry Daiquiri, you're in luck. Or if necessary, there's the chart-topping Anger Management: strawberries energised with tequila, Chambord and Red Bull. More lollies, anyone? Don't forget the Berocca.
If the upstairs balcony is all too much (and it does happen on occasion), the downstairs is slightly more low-key in a blokey way. Fitted out with a sports screen to rival TAB headquarters, this one is for serious Sunday afternoon sporting fun. Bring your mates, your team kit and a hangover to guarantee an open-armed welcome. The Townie is a one of the few old-school boozers left that side of the city, but not old-school enough to alienate anyone under 50. Come with beers on the brain but Red Bull on your shirt.
