The backbone of Balmain is its backstreet pubs. They’ve survived the property boom, the market bust and generations of change. They’re her to stay. But, many of them will change just a hint with the times. The Royal Oak is not, strictly speaking, an untouched classic. While a few Balmain Boys still frequent its main bar, the bistro has long since embraced foodie elitism; sort of. You’ll see words like “jus” on the evenly priced menu but, really, the fare is not terribly different from what might have been served some decades previous. The food here can be a little uneven depending on the skills of the cook.
