An excellent value addition to the surprising foodie Mecca of Balmain, this bistro serves skillfully crafted, richly flavoured food with exciting specials on the board.

Editorial

In the past few years, restaurants like Stock have helped raise Balmain's profile as a genuine foodie precinct. While no-frills Asian eateries, cafes and pubs have long provided the staple diet for locals, Stock, a small, comfortable, two-level bistro offers a smart, contemporary menu as a welcome alternative. It's light, bright and airy; the clear glass panels in the ceiling drink up light from the setting sun in warmer months. Downstairs, vibrant paintings, the open kitchen and stone feature wall add colour and interest; upstairs the atmosphere is a little more subdued, offering quieter spots for small groups on tables perched on the balcony.

The menu is graciously seasoned with the flavours of France and the Mediterranean; dishes are carefully crafted and neatly presented. Begin with double-baked blue cheese and thyme souffle with nashi pear and walnut salad, or pheasant terrine with mushroom, almond and ricotta tortellini served with broccoli puree and truffle jus. For mains, sample whole roast spatchcock with sweet onion puree and porcini jus, or roast fillet of local snapper with mussel and clam chowder. In addition to offering a small, interesting wine list, Bistro Stock doesn't shy away from BYO service. For this reason, quality of food and service, Stock is excellent value for money.
