Editorial

For the better part of the day the sun bounces off the shiny tables of Bar Sirocco so BYO sunglasses and snag a seat under the generous awnings (check your table doesn’t wobble on the Booth Street slope first). The outside tables are positioned to catch the breeze that whips up the hill, unfortunately also catching the snort and wheeze of passing buses. There are a few tables inside but outside seating is the go, under electric blue awnings that are so expansive they likely needed planning permission from the council.

A wide banner dominates the front of the cafe, proclaiming Bar Sirocco “Most Outstanding Cafe” in the Glebe Business Awards – but that was 2005. In 2007 it appears the service has become as dusty and proud as the banner; I ordered a coffee and the waitress spat out “Is that all?” as she snatched away the menu. Sharp service aside, the menu is broader than most cafes and has a distinct Italian lilt. The brioche breakfast stack consists of poached pear in vanilla bean syrup and stewed rhubarb layered between brioche and topped with creamy mascarpone. For something more savoury try the Sicilian-style poached eggs, served on wood-fired bread and finished with a fresh tomato basil salsa with salty specks of prosciutto.
