Bar Asia
Editorial
Searching for dinner at a moderate price point is a hopeless task in Annandale village. Crust woodfires a mean pizza but has no room for eat-in, the usually busy cafes are closed for dinner, and only lawyers and dentists could afford to eat out at Zenith and Three Clicks West on a regular basis. Locals therefore had high hopes for Bar Asia when it opened six months ago, the restaurant leaping out from static Booth Street with its neon white interior and frisky red and black highlights. But alas, despite the impossibly clean kitchen and funky interiors Bar Asia has failed to meet expectations.
The unadventurous menu makes Wok On In look exotic; offering the usuals such as pad Thai, hokkien noodles stir-fried with your choice of meat, and red, yellow and rendang curry. The limited menu would be less disappointing if the meals had more pep, but although food is served up quickly and prettily (in little waxed paper boxes), it seems they always forget to put the flavour in. The massaman curry, although well-cooked, lacks spice and is so undemanding I was left cruelly unsatisfied. Bar Asia is good for families, offering fast meals and unchallenging flavours, but for anyone craving a fierce laksa or spicy stir-fry it’s best to look beyond the village.
